[...] Kugelmass has it right: this actually has very little to do with who has to pay what and how many kids an unemployed single mother should or shouldn’t have. You don’t get this type of widespread, hyper-violent reaction from a question of economics - not even, I would argue, from people disgusted with the Wall Street bailouts. No, this is about “the worship of motherhood and the hatred of mothers.” And I don’t think you can have one without the other. [...]

"It is the worship of motherhood, and the hatred of mothers."

Yes, that sums it up.

I am of course against anyone having any children - we need to reverse population growth. My theory is that some people will be born anyway, so the species won't die out. But no new people is a good goal since realistically it means we might then get just enough new ones instead of too many.

I also think the idea that everyone should get to have children is strange. I think people who are desperate to have children and can't conceive but are not willing to adopt are not really that interested in raising children, just in reproducing themselves.

However, it's weird how upset people are at Suleiman and the tone they're taking. I do doubt it is possible for one person to take care of 14 babies and toddlers BUT people are freaking out for misogynistic reasons, basically.

brilliant piece, such a clear demystification of the 'right to life' dictum. i just don't know if you implicitly (in phrases like "a vivid demonstration of the price that our country pays") replace one form of 'using' the mother with another, though - as if she is 'foolish' because she failed to realise that (the amount of) children should be managed on an economistic level of 'cost-benefit' to society. There's something just as troubling about this neo-liberal submission of motherhood (which inevitably must involve real mothers) to means other than just the fact of procreation. Or am I parsing out the claims wrong?
