While I too do not want to give up on Foucault, I agree with Scull that the type of systemic theorizing Foucault, and members of the anti-psychiatric movement, did was not particularly helpful to the mentally ill. When our institutions were emptied, thousands of mentally ill people, unable to take care of themselves, found themselves on the streets. That is the real. It seems strange to me that just when institutions were actually becoming very humane, when ECT was modified to the point where it was more helpful than harmful, when drugs became really effective - along came the theories of Foucault, Laing, Szaz, and of course by extension Kesey (ONe Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest)and the institutions were emptied. If I were Foucault and had observed this phenomenon, I might attribute it to the State using the anti-psychiatric movement as an excuse to save money.

i don't really have anything to say here except your conclusion is thundering.
i'm trying to read this while studying for my final exam in ideology. i figured it would help. it sort of did. actually, maybe i just don't get it. i'll try again.
